The biggest game in American football is heading into a galaxy far, far away. Suddenly, choosing a side means more than picking an NFL team.
Star Wars Funday Football is scheduled for February 14, 2027, bringing a live animated version of Super Bowl LXI to Disney+, the ESPN App, Disney Channel and Disney XD. The presentation will follow the real game while placing its action inside the Star Wars universe. See the ESPN announcement.
That opens the door to the debate every watch party needs: if you could recruit characters from anywhere in the saga, who would make your team?
Before we start arguing about Han Solo's decision-making, here is what the event actually involves.
What is Star Wars Funday Football
This is an alternative presentation of the real Super Bowl. Player movements will become animated action, with Star Wars appearances and visual surprises woven into the broadcast.
The October 20 StarWars.com announcement also introduced a teaser featuring R2-D2 and C-3PO, with Anthony Daniels returning to voice the protocol droid. Further character, setting and commentary details will follow. Read the official reveal.
The appeal is easy to understand. Football supporters can follow the competition, while Star Wars fans have another reason to gather around it. A household does not need identical interests to enjoy the same evening.
Someone will be watching the score. Someone else will be scanning the background for familiar armor. Both will have something to talk about when the next play begins.
When and where to watch
Put Sunday, February 14, 2027 on your calendar. The platforms above are those announced for the presentation; international live and replay access varies by market.
For a watch party outside the United States, check local Disney+ and broadcaster listings closer to the event. An international replay listing should not be treated as confirmation of a live broadcast.
That is the practical part. Now we can turn to the question that will divide your group chat.
The five-role Galactic Dream Team challenge
Our community challenge is a fantasy draft, separate from the official broadcast lineup.
Choose a head coach, quarterback, receiver, defensive leader and wildcard. You may recruit from any Star Wars era, but use each character once. Your coach counts toward the five selections.
One house rule keeps the discussion interesting: no Force interference with the ball, no weapons and no vehicles on the field. You are drafting judgment, teamwork, athletic ability and nerve.
A famous name is not enough. Every selection needs a reason, and your five choices need to work together.
Head coach with the clearest plan
Leia Organa or Grand Admiral Thrawn?
Our argument for Leia is trust. Imagine being behind late in the game: she is the coach we would expect to keep people focused on what they can still accomplish.
Thrawn makes the case for preparation. Give him enough time to study an opponent and the temptation is obvious. You would expect patterns to become opportunities.
But knowing the right adjustment and persuading a team to execute it are different skills. Would you prioritize the strategist who anticipates the problem or the leader who makes everyone believe they can solve it?
Quarterback under pressure
Han Solo or Poe Dameron?
A quarterback has to recognize danger, make a decision and commit while the plan is falling apart. For our fantasy roster, Han offers improvisation and the confidence to attempt the pass nobody else would consider.
Poe gets our nomination for a team built around quick coordination. In this imagined matchup, we would trust him to turn movement into an attacking opportunity.
The concern is similar for both: confidence can become a risky decision at exactly the wrong moment. Who gets the ball when you need one clean drive rather than one spectacular gamble?
Receiver who creates an opening
Ahsoka Tano or Sabine Wren?
For this role, we are imagining two very different approaches to the same challenge.
Ahsoka is our pick for controlled movement: sell the first direction, wait for the defender to commit, then change the angle. Sabine is our candidate for a route that breaks convention and forces the defense to adapt.
With the Force and weapons off the table, the debate becomes more interesting. Who combines timing, awareness and creativity best?
Choose your receiver after your quarterback. A brilliant individual can still be the wrong partner for the person throwing the ball.
Defensive leader nobody wants to face
Chewbacca or Wrecker?
Both are irresistible fantasy selections when the opposing team needs a short gain.
We would build Chewbacca's case around loyalty and awareness of the players beside him. Wrecker is our choice for a defense that wants every contest to feel physically intimidating.
The strongest argument against picking purely for strength is discipline. A defense needs positioning and restraint as much as a dramatic tackle.
Who would you trust to protect the lead without giving away the penalty that changes the game?
Wildcard who changes the final play
Din Djarin or Lando Calrissian?
Your final selection should fix a weakness in the team you have already built.
For a roster full of risk takers, our imagined Din provides patience. For a team that has become predictable, Lando offers the possibility of an unexpected solution.
The wildcard is where your draft reveals its philosophy. Are you building around reliable execution or making space for a moment nobody can prepare for?
You can nominate someone else. Just explain the job you need them to do.
Our starting five for the debate
Our draft is Leia, Poe, Ahsoka, Chewbacca and Lando.
The idea is to combine leadership, coordination, timing, defensive strength and improvisation. It is a team built to respond when the original plan fails.
Its weakness? Lando and Poe might have very different opinions about which risk is worth taking. Leia could spend half the game making sure everyone is running the same play.
That is why your answer should include more than five favorites. Tell us the selection you nearly made, then explain why the team works better without them.
Bring your allegiance to the watch party
A Star Wars gathering can have its own character long before kickoff. Pick a faction, let guests defend their draft and give everyone one opportunity to challenge another team's weakest selection.
For collectors, the display becomes part of that conversation. A favorite helmet can be a simple way to show which corner of the galaxy you represent. Explore the Selecta Sabers cosplay helmet collection if you want to build that atmosphere around your own allegiance.
Then settle the important question before the game starts.
Comment with your coach, quarterback, receiver, defensive leader and wildcard. Which selection wins your team the game, and which one is most likely to ruin the plan?
